Taking a leap of faith in new ideas, implementing never before concepts for a low cost, highly efficient build the Black Rubber Beach House of Dungeness Beach in Kent, Washington sits boldly on the west coast. Simon Conder Associates used EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) rubber waterproofing which completely covers the exterior. This natural material resists ozone and UV, is water resistant yet vapor permeable, has elongation of over 400% with no degradation over time, and withstands extremes of temperature between -50°C and +130°C.  Its original structure was an old 1930s fisherman’s hut with renovations utilizing Wish-Spruce plywood for cladding of the timber frame from managed forests in Finland. Casting its black silhouette against the horizon, a flashy 1954 Airstream caravan parks just outside to accommodate guests. Their contrast is uncanny, truly a pleasantly surprising match made in heaven.

I find a way to fearlessly provoke your senses and take you by the heart to whatever it is I’m writing about. My sweet spot is creative writing, but for the last 20 years I have been providing freelance content for publications on sustainability and green practices, design, architecture, fashion, and non-profit charity. Recently all wrapped up in producing my first book. I have bounced from NYC to Indianapolis, but my true home is a lovely small town in Central Pennsylvania where there’s a legit drive-your-tractor-to-school-day.
