The Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud Watch

An intricate homage to a vintage design.

Launching at this year’s Baselworld, the new Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud FB-1R.6-1 watch celebrates the traditional art of watchmaking in a refined and thoughtful way. The timepiece takes inspiration from the 18th-century creations of the brand’s founder, Ferdinand Berthoud. In a similar way to his vintage marine clocks, this watch has an intricate construction and a beautiful design. Of course, it also displays the same level of craftsmanship and impressive attention to detail. However, the watch complements its vintage design cues with a distinctly modern aesthetic.

The regulator-type display features three separate openings, each corresponding to a different function. At 2 o’clock, a window displays the hour, while the minute appears in a subdial at 12 o’clock, alongside a hand-engraved ‘pyramid’ motif that gives a nod to an old astronomical Berthoud clock design. Finally, the third aperture features a power-reserve display mechanism as well as a cut-out which offers a glimpse at the mainplate.

The nickel silver dial boasts a hand-finished satin-brushed surface and a black rhodium-plating. Inside the 44mm case, the hand-wound Calibre FB-T.FC-R movement features a one-minute tourbillon and a fusee-and-chain mechanism with a 53-hour power reserve. Apart from the sapphire crystal cover on the back, the case also comes with two octagonal-shaped openings which provide a direct view of the intricate fusee-and-chain mechanism . A hand-sewn alligator leather strap completes the design. Made in an ultra-limited 20-piece edition, each Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud FB-1R.6-1 timepiece comes with its own number. A veritable – and rare – collector’s item. You can take a closer look at this masterpiece at Baselworld 2018. The event begins on 22 March and lasts until 27 March.
