Born in Porto, Portugal, Pedro Sottomayor moved to Italy to study industrial design. The years the designer spent in the country learning from Italian masters had a deep effect on his approach to design. In 1999, Pedro Sottomayor curated the minimalanimal project, which propelled him onto the international stage. A collaboration with Portuguese furniture brand Nautilus followed. It’s a partnership that continues to the present day. The designer established his own studio in 2009. Through his design firm, Pedro Sottomayor works as a product designer and creative director for other brands. Products range from furniture and lighting to eyewear and kitchenware. Notable projects include Nautilus furniture that is used in schools all over Portugal; a chair designed with acoustics in mind for a concert hall; and interior design for Portugal Sotheby’s International Realty.
