Dollfaces by Australian artist Freya Jobbins offers us a unique profile. These sculptures consist of plastic doll parts. A hand here, a forehead there, a random buttocks, it all comes together in bizarre harmony.
From the artist’s words, “my work explores the relationship between consumerist fetishism and the emerging recycling culture within the visual arts due to our society’s overspending on children’s plastic toys, especially dolls, the materials for my assemblages are very accessible.”
If you think about it, the message is clear. Reusing these old dolls for an artful purpose at least gives them a cause for the future. Typically, they just feed our consumerism convincing us that our kids need more stuff, and so we binge on buying plastics. We must be honest with ourselves, are we becoming the monsters featured here?
