Eco-Friendly Chairs: Odger Designed By Form Us With Love For Ikea

A blend of style, function, and sustainability.

Over the last few years, eco-friendly chairs and eco furniture have transformed from a creative idea into a reality. In 2017, Swedish giant Ikea offers a creative take on the ‘green’ furniture concept with the ingenious Odger chair. Designed by Stockholm-based Form Us With Love, the chair follows on the footsteps of the studio’s successful Janinge model, also made for Ikea.

Odger combines function, style, sustainability, and quality. “A few years ago, Ikea wanted to work with logistics in a more sustainable way and set up a production line for euro pallets in wood plastic. The choice of material turned out to less successful for the pallets, but instead, the material became the starting point for Odger chair. A mistake turned into something very good,” explains Åsa Hedeberg, Senior Product developer at Ikea. Hundreds of prototypes later, the design studio found the perfect balance between comfort, strength and flexibility.

The unique composite material of the eco-friendly chairs features a 30-70% blend of of reclaimed wood particles and recycled plastic. The material is injection molded in four different shapes that come together to create the click-lock assembly chair. Thanks to the no-screw design, the user can easily put the chair together without the help of instructions (although they do come with the box), connecting the base and the seat with a twist and click motion.
