Design firm Rotor’s project Grindbakken reminds of the expediency with which architecture can slip into mere artifact. The concrete structure on the docks of Ghent, which had previously been used to transport gravel between ships and trucks, has been given new life as a public multi-purpose space. A painstaking process of cleaning and painting took place at 36 selected sites that are now ready as blank canvases to exhibit artwork, hold local gatherings, and serve similar social and creative purposes. Minimalistic lighting does wonders as it illuminates and reflects off the white concrete, making the entire structure an inspirational strip of possibility near the silvery waters.
