Hands Project in Barcelona

In light of the economic crisis in Spain, HANDS delivers a sardonic and real awareness of the actions that should have been and should be taken to alleviate unemployment and poverty. Four radical artists – Octavi Serra, Mateu TargaDaniel Llugany and Pau Garcia – have shouldered the project, which is an installation work of many molded single hands sprinkled around Barcelona. The cast pieces are gently installed and held in place by melted then hardened wax. While one hand begs for money on a street corner, another desperately reaches into the coin return of a public telephone in search for money. An insinuating hand is positioned like a gun in front of an ATM, while another holds an ominous noose. Though the dark humor offers comic relief from the desperate situation, there is a clear call for action at the heart of the project.
