The Hook Lamp

A modular pendant lamp inspired by outdoor markets.

Seoul-based industrial designer Huisu Jo turned to an unlikely place for inspiration to create his latest lighting design: the city’s busy Dongmyo outdoor market. Named simply Hook, this pendant lamp references the hook systems and hangers used in the market stalls to display various items. The designer observed the way vendors used the most convenient ways to showcase their products. Apart from optimal visibility, they also ensured that customers can easily reach the items. The Hook lamp concept uses modular design to provide both flexibility and convenience.

The pendant-like design features a rounded rail with a ceiling mounting system. On the rail, a hook that ends with the cone-shaped diffuser and light has plenty of movement space. A wire connects the hook to the mounted rail, allowing the user to move the light horizontally as needed. Made of steel, Hook features steel pipes with modular sections that can be easily replaced with either longer or shorter elements to adjust the size of the lamp. The prototype features a light blue color as well as polished metal joints; orange wiring also adds a pop of bright color to the design. If Hook goes into production, the concept offers an easy way to customize the size or color of the lamp. Photographs© Huisu Jo.
