K-RATION Meals for Soldiers in Action by Giulio Iacchett

“K-RATION “Meals for Soldiers in Action is a utilitarian project by industrial designer Giulio Iacchetti, previously interviewed on GBlog here. Echoing the theme of Expo Milano 2015— “Feeding the Planet: Energy for Life”—the design pays close attention to food as a limited quantity and a source of energy. While instant food and snacks are typically branded with over-the-top pictures and text, these edible products are minimally presented. Each individual serving is clearly marked with its weight and calorie content so that a soldier could read this practical information at a glance. The packaging is color-coded to increase efficiency and minimalist to reduce bulk and waste, making fast food a little more simple and sustainable. In addition to the military designs, the Iacchetti’s series also includes a vacuum-sealed “bonus food” in honor of the Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti, who is currently aboard the International Space Station. All of the designs will be on view beginning this week, exhibiting at Triennale di Milano in Italy from January 22 – February 22 of this year.
