Don’t expect to find the ordinary park bench among Thor ter Kulve’s creations. In Public Furniture Interventions, existing perception of furniture is turned upside-down as even the most banal of items are paired with a public work to create a unique mutant. While “Pop-up Swing” makes use of public structures as the tree branch of a fully functional children’s swing, “Straathaard” converts trash bins into a burning furnace. An inflatable hat is placed over a streetlamp in “The Big Blue Bulb” in efforts to change the effect and presence of the streetlight in the public eye. The unexpected works are a surprise, but not so frivolous that the audience forgets to question why two such items have been ceremoniously fused together.
