The S-1500 Chair By Snøhetta

An eco-friendly twist on an iconic ’60s design.

Norwegian firm Snohetta doesn’t shy away from pushing boundaries or blurring the lines between different creative industries. The studio’s portfolio includes everything from architecture and landscape architecture to interior design and product design, to name a few. With S-1500, Snøhetta offers an eco-friendly take on furniture design while also re-imagining a popular product. Launched in the late ‘60s, Bendt Winge’s R-48 chair became a huge success in Norway. Now, Snohetta has partnered with furniture manufacturing company Nordic Comfort Products (NCP) to create a new version of the popular chair. After two years of research, the brand unveiled S-1500. This new Snohetta chair keeps the same beloved lines of the original, but features a structural redesign.

Made from recycled materials, the S-1500 chair features a recycled steel frame and a 100% recycled plastic shell. To craft the chair, NCP uses plastic sourced from old fishing nets, pipes, and ropes donated by local fish farming companies. The collected plastic undergoes a grinding process in order to create a suitable material for injection molding. While the company can make any product imaginable using this process, for this project they re-created a modernist design for today’s eco-conscious design lovers. As the source material varies from one chair to another, each product is one-of-a-kind and boasts different textures. However, all of them feature colors that remind of the North Sea. Introduced at the Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair, this Snohetta chair is currently available through the NCP site. Photographs© Bjornar Ovrebo, Snøhetta.
