In light of continual urban development, it is easy to forget the history of a building. Sekeping Kong Heng, part of Sekeping’s chain of retreats, does justice to the culture of the local town of Ipoh as well as the life story of the Malaysian building. A renovation project from Seksan Design, the building retains old structural elements such as brick pseudo-party walls that now divide guest spaces, and exposed ceiling beams that enhance the feeling of openness within the guest house. Open shutters and metal railings transform into façade details while still functioning as boundaries for privacy. The lived-in ambience is particularly welcoming to both travelers and locals, who are able to find a fantastic cup of coffee and delicious meal on the ground floor.
