An old barn converted into a home that honors the raw character of the rugged agricultural building.
When done right, the conversion of agricultural buildings can lead to architectural magic. This is exactly what happened with South Barn, a project completed by Studio Weave. Located on the breathtaking Isle of Wight, England, this humble building is more than 50 years old, which the studio highlighted in a sensitive transformation that keeps the rugged character of the original space very much alive. Now a family home embedded in a working farm, the old barn emanates rustic charm thanks to the studio’s deep respect for the original architecture. Exposed brick walls and solid wood beams enrich modern furniture and new finishes, resulting in a warm home where every inch of space honors the history of the old building.
Surrounded by farmland and connected to gorgeous coastal views, the family home is the epitome of a quiet retreat. Local plants bloom around the converted barn, strengthening the link to wild nature. Following a sustainable approach, the architecture firm preserved as much as possible from the old barn, with new interventions only ensuring everyday comfort. The team kept most of the original materials and finishes, putting them in the spotlight by leaving the rugged textures shine.
An open-plan kitchen and lounge area become the soul of the family home; this is not only a place for gathering, sharing, and socializing, but also for enjoying the slow pace of coastal living. Double-height glazing invites the light of the sunrise deep inside the main living area while bringing the residents closer to nature. Exposed brick and solid wood complement a smooth concrete floor and a tasteful selection of furniture and home accessories. The color palette blends both earthy and cool gray tones, mirroring the surrounding landscape.
Studio Weave collaborated with local company Imphouse, who brought a high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail to the project. Additionally, Tom Massey Studio created the perfect landscape design for South Barn while reusing existing materials and minimizing waste. Photography by Lorenzo Zandri.
