The Substance Of Empty Spaces

Absence, not presence, defines Daniele De Batté’s work. Interested in the tension between order and chaos and the balance between empty spaces, the Italian graphic designer, artist and sculptor creates minimalist artworks using only black and white. The clean lines, simple shapes and geometric structures, devoid of any color and surrounded by the negative spaces which actually give them meaning, reveal the essential shapes and their harmonious rhythm.

But the drawings and sculptures have a more fascinating foundation than it might seem at first sight. The artist designs the abstract works using geometric grids and mathematical formulas, creating asymmetrical and dynamic compositions. Simple elements combined in well-constructed systems which are either minimalist or complex. Ultimately, it’s the empty spaces that have the fundamental role of creating tension and harmony. Absence, thus, becomes the focus and the key to understanding the beauty of geometry in the artist’s work. Photo credits: Daniele De Batté.
