Wurf IV, A Levitating Rock Sculpture By Borgman | Lenk

A surreal artwork in a surreal series.

Art duo Borgman | Lenk started the Wurf series in 2015, using the same sculpture to change the interpretation of certain places with the addition of the temporary installation. Back then, the now familiar black ‘rock’ appeared in an enclosed greenhouse setting. An old church followed the next year, giving a new context to the ‘throwing’ concept of the series, while the third artwork presented the sculpture on a highway, taking it away from the previous two confined spaces. For Wurf IV, artists Anna Borgman and Candy Lenk propose a different kind of relationship between the levitating rock and its environment.

Ambitious and captivating at the same time, the site-specific project brings the black stone on the façade of one of the Marzahn I-III residential high-rise buildings in Berlin. Suspended at a height of 25 meters, the colossus seems to hover while falling, capturing the moment right before the inevitable crash. Dynamic and powerful, the levitating rock may represent a force of nature, contrasting the static, rational, man-made geometry of the building.
