The Asari Chair

An ergonomic office chair that references organic forms in an elegant silhouette.

Designed by celebrated Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa for Herman Miller, the Asari Chair blurs the line between utilitarian office seating and elegant home furniture. The elegant design combines organic forms inspired by nature with soft upholstery and ergonomic shapes to offer the perfect blend of comfort and style. The name refers to the Japanese term used for a species of clam. Looking at the chair’s soft curves, the source of inspiration becomes clear. Beautiful, refined, and reminiscent of living room seating rather than public workspaces, this chair also provides the high performance one would expect from quality office furniture.

The frame features the innovative PostureFit system that provides support to the lower back to promote a healthy posture. Additionally, the seat boasts a contoured design that minimizes pressure points with foam layers of different densities. A self-adjusting synchronous tilt system offers ergonomic support, adjusting automatically to each user. Created for home offices but also suitable for contract settings, the Asari Chair boasts gentle curves and a sculptural silhouette. The soft upholstery and padding enhance comfort further. Furthermore, the company uses recycled, ocean-bound plastic to produce the chair. This makes Asari eco-friendly and a great example of sustainable design.

Herman Miller offers the chair with a huge range of options, colors and materials. While the standard version comes in monochrome hues for an elegant look, customers can also select different color combinations. As for materials, options range from Maharam materials to leather and different base finishes. Asari comes in mid-back and high-back versions, both available with or without arms. The armrests come either as fixed or adjustable in height. Prices start at $1395, with the chair available soon online and in selected stores. Photography © Herman Miller.
