Frustrated by the dearth of quality, stylish, and affordable commuter bikes in the Netherlands, Wouter Eigenbrood founded BRIK Fietsen and created the bicycles he dreamed of riding. He designed three customizable models that are high quality, chic, and relatively budget-friendly for the craft market. All of the bikes, including the electric model, are outfitted with a drive shaft instead of a chain mechanism in order to deliver a faster, quieter, and more clean cycling experience. The low-maintenance drive shafts derive from propeller-driven bicycles that were popular in the late 1900s, and this old technology is actually more durable and less messy than the chains that all but replaced them in the twentieth century. Paired with strong, lightweight aluminum frames, the drive shaft makes for a great everyday bicycle. While the styles vary from classic to contemporary and angular, the frames are always sleek. The urban designs can be accessorized with leather saddles and grips as well as baskets, child seats, and more. Find BRIK Fietsen online and in select shops; the bikes start at €739 and ship at no added cost.
