Drill Bit Candle Collection

A fusion of artwork, design and utility in a collection of candles inspired by the mid-19th century Arts and Crafts movement.

Co-founded by Thorunn Arnadottir, who is also the brands’ head designer and creative director, 54 Celsius and PyroPet Candles have revolutionized the candle archetype with a series of imaginative, striking designs. The Drill Bit collection follows the same recipe of blending creative ideas, high-quality ingredients, and artistic sensibilities in decorative candles that doubles as table sculptures, whether lit or not.

Produced by 54 Celsius, this series of sculptural candles was designed by Lily Lanfermeijer and Joseph Hughes. To create the collection, the duo took inspiration from the mid-19th century Arts and Crafts movement and the genius of polymath William Morris, British designer, artist, writer and activist. The candles have distinctive shapes that reference the tools of craftspeople, bridging the gap between art, craft, design, and industrial drilling utensils.

Five sculptural designs that give a nod to industrial tools.

The Drill Bit collection consists of five different types of decorative candles. Like the series’ name suggests, each design recreates the shape of a different drill and also takes the name of that specific tool or refers to their purpose. The Auger Drill Bit candle features a beautifully sculpted form with a more pronounced industrial character, while the Chisel Drill Bit candle has a flattened top that references age-old tools that date back to 8000 BC.

The other three designs take their names from the drill bits used to make holes in concrete, masonry and metal. The Concrete Drill Bit features a special fluted pattern that gives a nod to the source of inspiration and also makes the candles dripless. While the Masonry Drill Bit candles have descending grooves that create a dynamic design, the Metal Drill Bit candles boast an iconic twisting shape that immediately brings an industrial drill to mind.

To make the collection, 54 Celsius uses a blend of quality soy and beeswax. All of the Drill Bit candles fit into a standard candle holder, but the brand has also included stainless steel candle holders in the series. Made to match the industrial style of the decorative candles, these holders add the perfect finishing touch to the collection. Finally, the brand also offers these candles in sets of five, available in White, Gray, or Color versions. All candles have a burning time of around 6 to 7 hours and come with recyclable and biodegradable packaging. Photographs © 54 Celsius.
