José Parlá’s New Warehouse Studio in Brooklyn

Once an old-school Brooklyn warehouse, this Gowanus studio is now an artist studio for José Parlá, whose collaborative murals The Wrinkles of the City and U.T.O.P.I.A. have been previously featured on GBlog. Converted by Parlá and Snøhetta, the space retains details such as high ceilings punctuated by skylights, folding doors, and concrete floors. The industrial atmosphere provides an inspiring place for Parlá to paint, display, and imagine new artwork. On the ground floor “Arena,” the U-shaped walls are lined with Parlá’s current canvases and murals, so that he can easily refine and add to the collection. Above, in the mezzanine-level “Nest,” there is a small gallery and kitchen where the artist can step away, unwind, and gain a new angle both his artwork and creative sanctuary.
