Peel Chair: Sculpting Plywood into Fluid Elegance

The design world continuously embraces natural phenomena as sources of inspiration, transforming simple observations into tangible elements of daily life. A recent testament to this practice is the Peel chair designed by Blond Studio. This London-based design firm, guided by the creative direction of James Melia, is renowned for its simple, yet ingenious design solutions to often complex problems. The Peel chair perfectly encapsulates this design philosophy.

Drawing inspiration from the natural process of bark peeling from trees, and channeling the timeless aesthetic of modernist Marcel Breuer’s plywood furniture, the Peel chair paints an illusion. On first sight, the impression is that the chair has been expertly crafted from one continuous piece of plywood, which looks as though it has been gently unfurled and bent into a smooth form.  The seamless transition from the backrest to the legs and the seat pan creates an aesthetically pleasing, continuous line that is strikingly unique to the chair’s side profile.

In terms of materials, plywood was the choice, and for a reason. Not only is it a low-cost alternative, but it also enables sustainable sourcing and manufacturing. Compared to traditional lumber practices, plywood significantly reduces wood wastage. This echoes the commitment of Blond Studio to mindful design, not only creating eye-catching products but also contributing to more sustainable practices in the industry.

One distinctive feature of the Peel chair is its intriguing side profile. The front legs bend back on themselves to become the rear legs, before returning up to form the backrest. This clever design twist enhances comfort and back support, creating a second plane of curvature. The formation of the chair was initially prototyped using CNC-machined MDF layers stacked together. This early design phase was crucial to solidify the proportions and ergonomics of the chair, leading to the refined design we see today.

The Peel chair exemplifies Blond Studio’s commitment to crafting elegant, simple design solutions, driven by inspiration from the natural world. With sustainability and ergonomic comfort at its core, this chair is not only a design feat but also a forward-thinking approach to product creation in the design industry.
