Pocketbook Hudson

A 19th-century brick factory in Hudson resurfaces as Pocketbook Hudson, a 40-room hotel where tall arched windows, copper-tinted mirrors, and Hudson Valley art reset the industrial mood.

Charlap Hyman & Herrero—fresh from a National Design Award—took the 1883 pocketbook plant that once pulsed with looms and re-keyed it for contemporary travellers. Brickwork, cast-iron columns, and plank floors remain in plain view, but the three-storey shell now folds in a street-front lobby, a café that slides into a copper-backed bar, and Ambos, a dining room screened by chain-mail drapery. Between them, claret modular sofas hug timber posts, and a column-free hall above seats two hundred for exhibitions, weddings, or whatever Hudson’s creative crowd thinks up next. Up on the fourth floor, a 6,500-square-foot showroom hosts rotating design collections—part retail, part community living room—anchoring the building once again in local trade.

Guest rooms honour the bones without fetishising them. Lofty brick walls and 12-foot windows meet maple platform beds, stitched leather benches, and canvas lanterns by Hudson-based makers. Seven layouts bias different rituals—soaking, stretching, reading—some with stainless-steel tubs set behind the headboard, others arranged as duplex loft suites under reclaimed-beam ceilings. Thoughtful commissions punctuate the quieter surfaces: bedside water jugs by Mamo, mirrors by Misha Kahn, a sculptural basin assembly for the public washrooms, all curated by artist WangShui. Outside, a free-standing warehouse is slated for a sento-meets-hammam spa by spring, rounding out a property that pairs factory scale with small-town hospitality and keeps the doors open late for the region’s makers, DJs, and night owls.
