Located in northern Sweden in a small village called Jukkasjärvi about 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, the Ice Hotel is the epitome of ephemeral and temporal architecture. The world’s first and largest hotel built out of snow and ice, since the existence of the hotel is entirely reliant upon the climate and Torne River, it takes on a completely different form every year as well as the designers is handpicked to work on the project each year. The amenities offered at the hotel include access to the wilderness of the Arctic Circle, views of the Northern Lights, warm accommodations and the Ice Bar which is a crowd favorite. Guests sleep in sleeping bags but no need to worry because the hotel promises the room temperature never falls below minus eight degrees Celsius, it provides just enough insulation to protect the ice from melting and exhilarate guests awake. The hotel has 47 rooms that can accommodate about 50-60,000 guests per year, but its closed in mid-April since the ice starts to melt which then provides the perfect blank canvas for architects the following year to start a new deisgn.
