Design, Italians do it better

The MINO Garden Gnome by Giovanni Tomasini

View all 4 Photos

The garden dwarf tradition is older than is commonly believed. Originating in XVII century Germany, garden dwarfs were exported by an English nobleman who used them decorate his garden, they have now become the widespread kitsch ornaments we all know. Despite its jazzy colors, the modern dwarf is a melancholic figure, condemned to a purely decorative function within a domesticated and artificial environment. Mino by Giovanni Tomasini on the other hand made entirely of pressed compost (aka organic waste)  lives in a garden full of life, destined to survive for one season only to then die with pride by feeding the surrounding vegetation.
