The Aires Mateus Architecture Studio was founded in 1988 in Lisbon, Portugal, by brothers, Manuel Aires Mateus and Francisco Aires Mateus. Both graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon in 1986 and 1987 respectively. They also taught in 2002 and 2005 at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University. Among many awards and exhibitions, they also represented Portugal at the Venice Biennale in 2010. The studio has a portfolio of both residential and commercial projects. The designs focus on volumes and the visual play between various shapes as well as the void and empty spaces that surround them.
