Jasper Morrison reimagines the 1944 Navy chair as recycled‑aluminum lounge chairs and sofas for indoors and out.
In 1944 the U.S. Navy asked Emeco to build a seat that could shrug off salt spray, fire, and torpedo shock. The answer was the 1006 Navy chair—hand‑formed from salvaged aluminum in a 77‑step routine that was tested to last 150 years. Eight decades later the same Hanover, Pennsylvania, factory still bends and welds those frames, and the original mission—make things that last—remains printed above the loading dock.
The new Navy Lounge collection drops that proven frame into relax mode. Jasper Morrison went back to Emeco’s archives, found the 1940s Navy sofa, and re‑worked the proportions for deeper cushions and an easy, reclined posture that works indoors and out. The curved back rails, signature hand‑brushed finish, and etched vintage logo stay put; only the attitude changes from ready‑for‑duty to ready‑for‑weekend.
Every piece starts as 80 percent recycled aluminum—cut, bent, welded, and heat‑treated by hand—then finished either in the classic brushed sheen or a range of powder‑coat colors approved for outdoor use. Frames carry the same lifetime warranty as the original chair. Cushions snap on with hidden hardware, zip off for cleaning, and can be re‑covered season after season in leather, wool, Sunbrella outdoor textiles, or a fabric of your choice.
The lineup covers more ground than the original naval spec: armless lounge chair, armchair, two‑seat, and three‑seat sofa. All share the same light weight—easy to shuffle around a living room or drag onto a deck—and the same quiet detailing: continuous side rails, just‑rounded edges, and optional solid‑wood arm caps that pick up the warmth of ash, walnut, or Accoya.
Durability keeps the environmental math simple. Aluminum that was once airplane fuselage or industrial scrap is now a lounge frame—and it can be recycled again with no loss in strength. Cushion covers swap out at home, so stained fabric or a new color palette never consigns the frame to the curb. As Morrison puts it, the unusual mix of indoor‑outdoor flexibility, longevity, low weight, and real comfort makes Navy Lounge “a uniquely smart choice.”
Pick a powder‑coat (sky blue, sweater brown, classic black), choose your upholstery, click the cushions into place, and lean back. The Navy Lounge is designed to stick around—on the porch, in the living room, and, eventually, in someone else’s. Longevity never felt this refreshing.
