Inspired by the movement of grass as it receives a gentle breeze, product and furniture designer Alicja Prussakowska imagines an elegant solution to hallway seating and storage. “Tilia”is a multifunctional, freestanding hanger for the modern space; a simple yet elegant form elevates the humble wood and draws attention to its traditional craft. Prussakowska’s poetic approach seamlessly merges seven graceful wooden hangers with a curved white bench that would complete the foyer of any home.

Each vertical post appears to grow from the handsome base below, reaching outwards as they stretch towards the sky. A natural and comforting aura radiates from its unique, sculptural form as it stands alone in the monotonous world of mass-production; unlike modern manufactured furniture that can arrive at your doorstep with the click of a button, Tilia is a pure display of artistry and ingenuity. It almost seems wrong to hang a coat or jacket on its handsome frame, but the design’s clever utility adds yet another dimension of beauty to an already breathtaking piece. Prussakowska is currently working on her master’s degree in the Faculty of Industrial Design at the Jan Matejko Fine Academy of Arts in Kraków as she continues her creative exploration of the functional world.

Lizzie Wright is an aspiring artist and designer with a passion for the written word. While she works on her BFA in Industrial Design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), she spends her (rare) spare time riding around Providence on her trusty Cannondale and drinking lots of coffee. She is especially fascinated by the dichotomy between aesthetic form and function, which has an immense influence on her work. As a lover of the natural world, Lizzie plans to focus on Nature, Culture, and Sustainability Studies to pursue a more efficient future for design. Read more by visiting her website
