The Ferm Living x Utzon Can Lis Collection

View all 19 Photos

A beautiful collection of furniture, lighting, textiles and accessories inspired by the Spanish home of iconic architect Jørn Utzon.

Developed in a collaboration between Danish design brand Ferm Living and the Utzon Center, this collection pays homage to the life, work and design philosophy of Jørn Utzon, the architect behind one of the most iconic buildings in the world: the Sydney Opera House. After the project faced years of budget controversies and political strife, Jørn Utzon left Australia in 1966 and never returned to see the finished building. His first architectural design completed after this departure was Can Lis.

A sandstone house built on the southern coast of Mallorca, Spain, this family home stood as a counterpoint to the grandiosity and cutting-edge engineering of the Sydney Opera House. Designed with linear pavilions and connecting courtyards, Can Lis creates a play between stone, wood and light. The residence seamlessly merges Scandinavian minimalism and the charm of Mallorcan architecture. The Ferm Living x Utzon Can Lis collection captures the heart of Utzon’s family home while honoring its heritage.

“For Ferm Living, engaging in this collaboration with the Utzon Center was an opportunity to introduce the legacy of Can Lis to a broader audience. In its profound humility and understated brilliance, Can Lis serves as an enduring testament to how our homes can simultaneously anchor and release us, creating spaces that hold, challenge, and comfort in equal measure,” says Phillipp Materna, Head of Design at Ferm Living.

Translating the essence of Can Lis in a contemporary design language, the collection balances Scandinavian minimalism with Mallorcan craft and the expressiveness of natural materials. At the same time, the series pays homage to Utzon’s love of nature, sensitivity to organic forms and his belief that architecture should emerge naturally from its environment.

Inspired by the concepts embedded in the fabric of Can Lis, this Ferm Living collection comprises a wide range of designs that help to create warm and timeless living spaces. In the furniture series, design lovers can find indoor tables and a chair made from Douglas fir wood. Outdoor furniture includes fiber concrete tables and a fire pit made of Corten iron. The lighting range also celebrates the rich textures of natural materials, with designs that showcase the best features of travertine and wood.

The collection also comprises other items, including home accessories like a mirror and mouth-blown glass vases; a kitchen range with stoneware pieces finished with a matte glaze; a children’s collection designed to encourage little ones’ imagination and inspire them to explore; and a series of textiles that bring Jørn Utzon’s bird sketch to life.

Launched on March 6, 2025, the Ferm Living x Utzon Can Lis Collection celebrates the legacy of the renowned architect with beautifully designed pieces that bring heart and warmth to living spaces. Photography@ Ferm Living.
