The Layer X Orrefors Ensemble Collection

A series of modular glass objects with architectural forms and different colors.

Marking the first collaboration between London-based studio Layer Design and iconic Swedish glassware brand Orrefors, Ensemble seamlessly merges traditional glassworking techniques and contemporary design. The collection is also a beautiful example of modular product design. Comprising six individual pieces, the series allows the creation of nine different configurations. Inspired by architectural forms, the glass objects boast cylindrical and rounded forms with smooth or ribbed textures. The three plinths and three dishes combine in various ways thanks to openings that fit perfectly with each other. Thus, the user can mix-and-match the objects to create different arrangements, expressing their creativity at the same time. The assembled glass sculptures enhance the tabletop landscape with their striking silhouettes. The effect has even more visual impact with the use of differently sized pieces, brought together in a balanced composition.

Exquisite crafting techniques that complement contemporary design.

Layer collaborated closely with the Swedish brand on the crafting process. While the plinths feature a vertical ridge pattern that gives a nod to classical architectural elements, the dishes have a lighter appearance achieved through the use of a blend of glassblowing and cold-working techniques. Every item from the Ensemble range has a different color. Light and muted, the hues range from river blue and pine green to warm hazel brown. The series comprises objects in small, medium and large sizes. Multi-functional, these glass items can be used as vases, serving plates, containers for accessories, and more.

The Layer X Orrefors Ensemble collection will make its debut during 3 Days of Design festival, at Frederiksgade 1 in Copenhagen, from the 7th to the 9th of June 2023. Afterward, the series will be launched in selected stores and on Orrefors’ website in the middle of September, with prices ranging from around $110 to $190.
