Dreaming in White: Envision the Beauty of Piperi House, a Cycladic-Inspired Design Amidst the Azure Aegean Sea
Set against the lush backdrop of Kythnos Island, Greece, the Piperi House stands as an impressive testament to the intersection of tradition and innovation in architecture. This extraordinary residence was designed by Berlin-based architect Sigurd Larsen, who took inspiration from the vernacular architecture of the Cycladic villages while infusing it with modern design elements.
The structure is a symphony of white monolithic cubes, reminiscent of the traditional houses in the Cycladic archipelago, offset by the rich, contrasting hues of the Aegean landscape. Nestled on a peninsula that extends into the azure sea, Piperi House’s location affords breathtaking, panoramic views of the neighboring islands. This architectural gem elegantly complements its extraordinary surroundings.
The fascinating labyrinth of white stairs, reminiscent of M.C. Escher’s drawings, provides an intriguing path through the house’s levels. Offering a playful and continual movement throughout the residence, the stairs connect spaces while providing unique perspectives of the stunning panorama, at different heights.
The retreat’s design ensures that every key area of the house – the bedrooms, the bathtub, the dining table, and even the sofa – frames an undisturbed view of the uninhabited Piperi Island. In this way, the natural beauty of the landscape becomes an integral part of the interior design, creating an intimate connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Sprawling terraces that further immerse the residents into the spectacular landscape.
The house further embraces the outdoors through its terraces, beautifully constructed to highlight the Mediterranean landscape. Two staircases also lead to the sea on either side of the peninsula. This careful design offers access to a rocky eastern cliffside, ideal for those adventurous enough to leap into the sea, as well as a sandy southwestern beach – perfect for relaxing afternoons.
A quaint guest house built into an existing stone barn adds to the charm of the house. This volume also features an outdoor kitchen and pergola. The positioning of the main house and guest house allows residents to witness the beauty of the sunrise from the former and the sublime sunset from the latter.
A celebration of the past, present, and future of architecture, Sigurd Larsen‘s Piperi House exemplifies the elegance that emerges from blending traditional Greek elements with contemporary design. For those lucky enough to experience this remarkable house firsthand, Piperi promises an unparalleled sojourn amidst the breathtaking beauty of Kythnos Island. Photography © KKROM.
