E-bikes designed with a sophisticated anti-theft system and other ingenious features.

In 2016, Amsterdam-based brand VanMoof launched the Electrified S bike. The following year, the popular X model entered the brand’s lineup. Now, the company takes the concept of an electric bicycle and urban commuter to a new level. The recently introduced S2 and X2 bikes maintain the distinct look of the previous models. Of course, they also come with an impressive range of innovative features to make them stand out from the crowd. And one of them takes center stage. To bring more peace of mind, the company integrated a clever anti-theft system that makes locks obsolete.

Activated through the press of a button at the back, the system inserts a locking pin in the rear hub to stop potential thieves from riding off with the bike. And that’s not all. After a first warning sound, the bicycle sounds a loud alarm, disables both the motor and the smart functionality, and flashes the LED lights in an SOS pattern. A tracking signal allows the owner to find the stolen bike with the dedicated app. Alternatively, the company also offers the opt-in ‘Bike Hunters’ service which tracks the bike for the user. Alongside the anti-theft system, the S2 and X2 e-bikes also have a Bluetooth Rider Recognition feature which puts the bicycles into ‘ready to ride’ mode as the owner approaches.

Hidden inside the tubular coated aluminum frame, the battery and the motor are both more powerful than previous Electrified versions. The battery has a 504Wh capacity and charges up to 50% in 80 minutes. Paired with the 250-500W electric motor that has 4 power levels, it offers assistance for up to 150km at a top speed of 32km. The Turbo Boost system provides acceleration whenever the rider needs it the most. Other features include 166 LEDs that brighten up the frame, smart controls, integrated display, and a fully enclosed drivetrain.

The unisex 2-speed Electrified S2 and X2 weigh 19kg and come in Thunder Grey or Fog White. The first batch of bikes sold out quickly, with 2,500 units ordered in the first 24 hours. If you want to pre-order one of the e-bikes from the ‘early bird’ package at $2598 instead of $3398, head over to the brand’s website for more info. Photographs© VanMoof.
