Bavaria Road Studio in London

Once a Methodist Chapel, this double-height space now serves as an office and studio apartment. Refurbished by West Architecture, the dual-function space is now lofted. There is an open plan kitchen and living room below, and a laminated birch plywood balustrade above. The plywood structure supports the mezzanine and increases the sense of privacy by concealing the sleeping area. Top and bottom levels are connected by the handsome folded plate staircase. Made of untreated mild steel, the stairs will oxidize over time, developing a warmer, more richly textured look while continuing to draw the eye as a focal point in this admirably minimalist studio.
