Envisioned as “wearable” lighting, Madco is an innovative and playful lamp that brings together design, fashion and color. Italian designer, architect and art director Elisa Ossino created the lamp for Japanese brand Ambientec using a motif that appears frequently in her work: the sphere. Here, the orb transforms into a luminous core that brightens the surroundings in an ingenious way.
Nestled in a matte hemisphere within a slender structure, the lamp rotates 360° to direct the light where needed. “MADCO’s roundness and its ability to pivot will make it a lively and empathetic object – a small character. While conceiving its design, I envisioned the round face of my daughter Maddalena, who also inspired the name,” says Elisa Ossino.
Minimalist and stylish, Madco has a large handle that allows the user to carry it like a bag, whether from one room to another or from indoor living spaces to a terrace of garden. Four legs provide excellent support when the lamp rests on a table or shelf. While it houses technological components, the opaque element also adds color to the design, along with a matching frame finish. The lamp comes in five hues that give a nod to the concept of lighting as a lifestyle accessory: Peach, Olive, Terracotta, Mustard, and Cherry.
Conveniently, Madco has a high waterproof rating and comes with a USB port for easy recharging. Ambientec has launched the design with a photo shoot curated by Elisa Ossino. The images highlight the concept behind the lamp, with Madco playfully presented as both lighting and fashion accessory. “While we are accustomed to associating light primarily with the environment, the photo shoot also provided inspiration to emphasize the lamp’s profound connection with the body. One can literally wear it and carry it anywhere,” adds the designer. Photography by Valentina Sommariva.
