Design, Interior Design, Italians do it better

Rivolta, Modular Bench+Shelving by Raphael Di Biase

View all 9 Photos

Our friend Italian designer Raphael Di Biase presents a different type of modularity, a hybrid between the ultra-modular cubic units and the strict form of calculated pieces. The Geometric Rivolta Bench is a union of five different components: two hollow wooden units, and three blue foam forms. The wooden pieces are functional as shelves for storage but also can be transformed into part of the structure for the seating, supplemented by the cushioned wedges. What is unique about Di Biase’s design is that the modularity of the units does not rely on their uniformity; instead, the organic curves of the solid volumes act in complement to the angled forms of the wooden pieces. Though there is a limit to the number of configurations, a good handful of them are possible, such as a low bookshelf organization as well as a chaise-like form. Even more convenient is the fact that some of these seating or lounging combinations only require the rearranging of the foam pieces, making it easier and light work to try out a new variation.
