Wrap-Genius Food Labeling for the Future

View all 8 Photos

In its current incarnation, Wrap-Genius is one man’s journey to intuitive food labelling. Graduate student Sam Slover began tracking what he was eating, what was in it, where he bought it, and where it originated. Over the course of three months, he recorded details about his food and designed the Wrap-Genius dashboard to visualize his eating habits in an informative but not prescriptive way. He found that he consumed 3,548 distinct ingredients, all present in food sourced from ten different countries. He identified which foods had the biggest impact on his diet, based on what he wanted to know, such as the highest nutrient-to-price ratio and saltiest product. In response to tracking his purchases, Slover grew more mindful of his eating and tried to buy more raw, local, and non-GMO products. For him, the cost was no higher than when he bought primarily freezer dinners; the meals just took more time to make. Slover is currently reaching out to grocery chains and developing an app that will allow the public to use Wrap-Genius for both communal and personal tracking. The finished app will offer a holistic look at food, going beyond the nutritional information provided by the USDA’s SuperTracker.  As Slover envisions it, Wrap-Genius will scan any product with a barcode and encourage users to set their own priorities based on the changes they want to see, feel, and taste.
