The Cantinetta Chair

A dining chair designed with an elegant expression meant to look at home in any interior, including rooms that pair Japanese and Western influences.

One of Japan’s leading producers of wooden furniture, Karimoku Furniture has been collaborating with renowned designers to manufacture elegant pieces for contemporary interiors. For the Cantinetta Chair, the company has partnered with Keiji Takeuchi. To create the Cantinetta collection, the designer was initially inspired by the CS1105 chair which was discontinued in 2015 but remains in use in the cafeteria of Karimoku Furniture’s factory. Simple yet charming, the chair had a minimalist expression that suited any space. Keiji Takeuchi’s realization that modern Japanese dining areas seamlessly bring together both traditional and Western design influences also influenced the design. Named after the Italian word for “small dining room” while also giving a nod to “La Cantinetta “, a trattoria often frequented by the designer and his friends, the chair embodies coziness, togetherness and warmth.

Designed with an elegantly simple silhouette, Cantinetta blends into any space without stealing all the attention. Like the rest of the collection, which includes a dining table, it features softly curved shapes and bold lines. The chair optimizes comfort with a wide backrest that provides excellent back support. A woven seat adds a tactile accent. Angled rear legs and rounded armrests give a playful expression to the design. At the same time, the minimalist profile highlights the warmth and character of natural wood.

The Cantinetta Chair is available in various colors that allow for a wide range of interior design styles, from Japanese to Western, but also eclectic spaces. Apart from Cotton Natural that boasts a light, soapy finish with a durable coating, the chair also comes in Cantinetta Green made with a color specially developed in Italy. Additionally, Karimoku Furniture will introduce a Japanese chestnut wood version for the first time internationally, at a venue in the Porta Romana district. Alongside the dining chairs, the rest of the Cantinetta collection will make its European debut during Milan Design Week 2026, held from April 20 to April 26. Photography© Karimoku Furniture.
