Despite their somewhat unassuming appearance, Brandon Clifford and Wes McGee’s Ply Shelves are highly complex and have been widely recognized: they have won the titles for both furniture design and people’s choice in the 2011 ‘AZ Awards’ as well as being named Architectural Record’s ‘Product of the Year’ in 2010.

Created using 3D modeling, the variable thickness shelves combine the conventionally separate system of wall-mounted brackets into a singular, sculpted form. Cleverly concealed, the brackets are spaced 16 inches apart to align with wall studs while CNC-parts with low-VOC finishes are designed to reduce waste by optimizing material yield. Laminated plywood from managed forests gives the shelves an almost organic quality, which provides a refreshing contrast to traditionally utilitarian design. Lizzie Wright is an aspiring artist and designer with a passion for the written word. While she works on her BFA in Industrial Design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), she spends her (rare) spare time riding around Providence on her trusty Cannondale and drinking lots of coffee. She is especially fascinated by the dichotomy between aesthetic form and function, which has an immense influence on her work. As a lover of the natural world, Lizzie plans to focus on Nature, Culture, and Sustainability Studies to pursue a more efficient future for design. Read more by visiting her website
