An eco-friendly retreat on the coast of Oaxaca, Mexico, ONTO House features 1- and 2-story volumes surrounded by tropical vegetation.
Going on a vacation is not just about taking a break from work. It’s a chance to recharge batteries, take a step back, slow down, and appreciate every moment. A tranquil, nature-immersive space provides the perfect way to do that. Located in in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico, ONTO House is an eco-friendly retreat designed to blend with the wild landscape. The complex comprises several 1- and 2-story volumes with carefully divided spaces that maximize the connection to nature. Tropical vegetation surrounds the retreat, with pathways leading guests to both public and more private areas.
Designed by CRB arquitectos, ONTO House features six modules that optimize comfort and relaxation. At the entrance, there’s a service area; the seven guest suites boast four modules; and the public space features open sides that provide awe-inspiring views of the ocean. Outside, guests have access to an infinity pool, a jacuzzi, a fire pit, and a pristine beach.
CRB arquitectos not only harmonized the design with the natural setting, but also used materials that complement the site. Some, even give a nod to ancient traditions. For example, the studio used “Chukum” plaster for the walls, a name first used by the Mayans for the Havardia albicans tree that grows in Yucatán. Made from the resin of the tree, the plaster boasts a light pink hue that gives exceptional warmth to the retreat. Likewise, locally sourced wood enhances the feeling of comfort; the team used tropical timber for the rafters, window frames, doors and ceiling beams. Pigmented concrete frames match the warm color palette while anchoring the volumes to the site.
A true eco-friendly retreat, ONTO House promotes the concept of sustainable travel. Apart from boosting the local economy, it boasts a range of sustainable features, including photovoltaic panels, rainwater collection systems, and passive ventilation. Furthermore, the landscaping is 65% green, with tropical plants immersing guests in the beauty of Oaxaca. Photography© César Béjar.
