Abstract glass and porcelain objects that explore the intersection between light, form and creation.
Part of Designblok 2026 that focuses on the theme of Light, Photosynthesis introduces design and art lovers to a body of work that explores the intersection between light, form and life. Award-winning designer Maxim Velčovský uses a conceptual approach to merge art and design in objects that are both organic and abstract. With this exhibition, held in Prague, the Czech Republic, the prominent Czech designer explores the process of photosynthesis and thus the lifeblood of nature via glass and porcelain vases that look like contemporary works of art.
The glass vases become both holders of life and filters of light; their sensual forms exude the notion of creation and transformation. Science, design and art come together in objects that are as practical as they are fascinating. Bold colors and strong contrasts reinforce the genesis concept further, mirroring the magic of creation – in nature, in an artist’s studio, or in the human mind. In use, the Photosynthesis vases reach their full potential, in a perfectly coordinated dance of form, material and light. They become vessels that hold organic matter, yet they also represent the idea of transformation, evolution and life.
To create the vases, Maxim Velčovský collaborated with AJETO glassworks and Edo Studio glassworks in Svojkov. The Photosynthesis exhibition will be on show at Prague Castle’s Riding Hall from the 7th to the 11th of October, 2026. Photography© Maxim Velčovský.
