The Slab Collection

An ultra-minimalist chair collection that pairs modern, clean forms with traditional woodworking techniques.

Created in a collaboration between handcrafted wood furniture specialists Union Wood Co, and designer Alyssa Lewis of Studio Block, the Slab Collection perfectly blends minimalist design and traditional woodworking techniques. Following their partnership during the 2019 Interior Design Show Vancouver, Union Wood Co turned to Studio Block to kick off a series of collaborations with designers from all over the world. The Slab Collection showcases a shared philosophy of infusing practical, everyday objects with a high-end aesthetic.

The ultra-minimalist line embodies Alyssa Lewis’ approach to design, which he calls ‘reduction’. “I find there is a lot of visual noise that surrounds us every day, so I like to simplify things in my design work to quiet the world around us,” she says. Exploring essential forms, the seating boasts simple shapes with clean lines but the chairs and stools don’t sacrifice comfort. The collection’s name references the slabs of wood which Union Wood Co selects by hand to ensure their quality.

Crafted from ash wood, the chairs are more lightweight than other hardwood furniture, but just as durable and shock-resistant. The range includes a dining chair, a counter stool, and a bar stool. They come with a matte commercial grade clear coating; this finish protects the surface of the natural material while letting its beauty shine. Available in three finishes, the Slab Collection comes in natural, whitewashed, or blackened versions. The company can also make the furniture with custom finishes upon request. The chairs suit residential as well as commercial settings, but safe to say look timeless anywhere. Photography© Dylan Hamm, Britney Gill Photography.
