Living the Dream: The Tanglewood Residence

View all 12 Photos

Steel, aluminum and glass intertwine together in a poetic relationship to form a distinct home for a violinist in West Stockbridge, MA. The house was built by Schwartz of Schwartz/Silver Architects for his wife when he  was inspired by the wonders of the Grand Canyon during a visit. The inspiration recurred to him again in a dream where he then brought his image into a sketch. The dream chased the designer and became a reality within the magnificent construction of the Tanglewood residence. The steep slope of the terrain provides as the base for this rectangular shaped home. It rises strikingly out of the backdrop with a main room that hovers 14 feet above the ground. It’s skeleton is made up of a steel truss with a concrete and steel-decked roof and floor structure and has outer glass walls that reveals views of the rolling Berkshire Hills nearby.
