Designed by Olson Kundig Architects and built in the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State, the Sol Duc Cabin is stilted and clad in steel for utmost protection against the elements. The stilts elevate the retreat above flood-level and the steel deck, sliding panels, cantilevered roof, and walls make the design impenetrable. These metal components were assembled off-site in order to minimize the impact on the natural environment. When occupied, the cabin can be adjusted so that the panels slide back and reveal windows and a glass wall. Altogether a low-maintenance getaway home, the cabin has just enough space for a couple inside. There’s a den and a loft outfitted with built-in shelves and a kitchen. From indoor, one can enjoy views of the forest in any season.
