Smith-Clementi Residence by Rios Clementi Hale

Upon viewing the form of Smith-Clementi Residence, one might be surprised to find its master bedroom surrounded by a scattering of wooden beams that seem to argue against the modernist style of the rest of the home. The renovations on the 1920s, Californian home completed by Rios Clementi Hale Studios aim to provide a call-and-answer, a dialogue of sorts between the sleek, horizontal lines of the house and the almost inside-out design of the glass-encased bedroom. But there is purpose to the departure from the norm: the vertical framing serves as a sunscreen to the bedroom, and similar wooden elements such as low plywood walls and a timber staircase dictate Smith-Clementi’s interiors. Using materiality as a conduit, the home reconnects with its natural surroundings of beautiful foliage and verdant greens. Photography Undine Pröhl
