A creative timepiece that celebrates typeface design as well as the precision of timekeeping.
Launched in 2017 by Hong Kong-based watch brand Anicorn, The Trio of Time project brought together designers and artists who pushed the boundaries of timepiece design in innovative ways. We’ve previously wrote about the project’s first watch, the gorgeous Hidden Time watch created in a collaboration between Anicorn and Korean designer Jiwoong Jung; the second timepiece designed by Brooklyn design office Order; and the third timepiece, the Redundant watch created by designer Ji Lee. In 2023, The Trio of Time (TTT) has introduced another imaginative design in the series: the TDF Watch. Based in Christchurch, New Zealand, The Designers Foundry (TDF) is an online platform where international type designers create typefaces for a global audience. In late 2022, TDF launched a wall clock to celebrate its 10th anniversary. Now, the design has also been translated into a wristwatch format.

Created in a collaboration with Austria-based, long-time TDF member David Einwaller, the watch is a testament to the power of innovation as well as the art of timekeeping. The dial boasts different typefaces: Tomato Grotesk and Romek, both of them designed by TDF member Andrea Biggio. In a nod to the precision of typeface design and of instruments that measure the passage of time, the dial displays the time in a new way. Around the center, the minutes appear in Arabic numerals. As for the hours, they stand out against the white dial in black lettering. Two hands with black and brown finishes show the time, while a slender yellow hand frames the minutes in a circle.
A must-have for design lovers and collectors, the TDF watch will make its official debut on 11 July 2023. The timepiece will be available exclusively in the online stores of TTT Watches and Anicorn Watches, at a price of $195. Photography © TTT Watches, The Designers Foundry.
