An apartment designed with an open layout and reversible partitions that put traditionally private spaces at the heart of the home.
With the Turó Park project, Barcelona-based architecture and interior design firm SIGLA Studio explores the concept of placing traditionally private areas at the heart of the home. Instead of creating separate rooms that are disconnected from one another, the architects redesigned this apartment with an open-plan layout that redefines the meaning of domestic spaces. Located on Mestre Nicolau street, in Barcelona’s Turó Park neighborhood, the apartment had a classic floor plan with fragmented rooms. To establish a natural flow between different areas, the studio placed a multifunctional volume at the center of the living space. This volume houses the kitchen and dressing area as well as the bathroom with a bathtub, effectively integrating a private ritual into the rhythm of daily life.
The client, who lives alone, wanted an apartment with open spaces defined by spatial continuity and natural light. A layout suitable for social gatherings was also included in the brief. As a result, the central volume boasts a pivoting window system that allows the client to close or open the bathroom as needed. The reversible partitions thus blur the line between public and private areas.
To further emphasize the concept of a unified living space, SIGLA Studio used a single mineral finish for the walls, ceilings and floors. The multifunctional core boasts different materials that differentiate between services. While the kitchen features plywood panels with aluminum cladding, the bathroom boasts green tiles with glazing that reflects the light. Finished in walnut wood, the dressing area brings extra warmth to the space.
The studio drew inspiration from the work of minimalist American artist Donald Judd and 17th-century Dutch paintings for this project. Consequently, the Turó Park apartment features clearly defined spaces, interconnected areas, understated interiors, and programs that adapt to different ways of living over time. Additionally, SIGLA Studio infused the apartment with character and charm by choosing an eclectic range of vintage and mid-century modern furniture and home accessories.
